Music Ministry

“Addressing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody to the Lord with your heart” ~ Ephesians 5:19

The diverse music ministry at St. Dominic reflects the Dominican Order’s commitment to living out authentic, historically rooted Catholicism in a spirit of contemporary evangelism. Following Pope Benedict XVI’s liturgical vision, we serve with the knowledge that sacred music serves to dignify the liturgy, catechize the faithful and evangelize the community.

Our growing music program is looking for singers!
If interested in getting involved, please reach out to Luke Shalz the Director of Music at [email protected]. Singers of all abilities are welcomed and wanted. There’s no way to become a singer without learning!

Saturday 5:00 p.m.

The Choir at the Vigil Mass sings two or three hymns, either traditional or contemporary,
accompanied by piano, and guitar. The proper chants, with their psalm verses, are sung at this
mass in English. Rehearsals are on Thursdays at 7:15 p.m. in the Church.

Sunday 7:30 a.m.

The music at this Mass is simple, contemplative, traditional, and solemn. A cantor chants the Fr.
Samuel Weber setting of the English proper chants and leads the congregation in acclaiming
the Roman Missal’s mass setting. Some chanted Latin hymns are used as well, often pulled
from the Dominican Office.

Sunday 9:00 a.m.

The 9:00 a.m. Mass is a setting for mostly contemporary music. We use guitar, bass and piano
with a mix of voices on top. It is our goal to help enhance the spirituality of the Mass through our
offering of music. In picking music, we primarily use the Spirit and Song catalog, with
contemporary gospel songs as well.

Sunday 11:00 a.m.

This Mass is very traditional. A choir chants English propers with psalm verses, the Mass setting
is a Latin chant setting from the Kyriale (like the Missa de Angelis or Missa Orbis Factor), and
the offertory and communion processions are adorned by sacred music from composers like
Palestrina, Victoria, Byrd, and Monteverdi. Usually, one hymn is sung after Mass as a
recessional. Music is accompanied by organ. Occasionally this Mass also has a flutist or
brassists. Rehearsals are on Thursdays at 7:15 p.m. in the Church.

Sunday 1:00 p.m.

This Mass is Spanish/English. This is the Spanish choir. This ensemble uses music from the “Flor y Canto” Hymnal, as well as
the Ignatius Pew Missal’s Spanish Edition, “Canta La Missa” and other traditional sources.
Styles include an even mix of chant, Latin American folk hymns, contemporary Latin rhythm,
and standard Western hymn music. This ensemble aims to represent a reverent,
tradition-rooted, still thoroughly Latin American flavor of sacred music. Music is accompanied by                                                                                              guitar, organ, flute, and piano. Rehearsals are on Thursdays at 5:30 p.m. in the Mary Magdalene Room.

Magdalena.
